Acupuncture and Neurophysiology

چکیده
Application of acupuncture methods goes back centuries. Today, there is much scientific research and many approaches to explain the mechanism of acupuncture. Among these approaches, the most popular one is the neurophysiologic approach. In this paper, we explain the series of events that follow the insertion of acupuncture needles under the headings of local reactions; regional reflexes related with viscero-cutaneous and cutaneo-visceral reflexes; increased levels of -endorphin, enkephalin, and serotonin in the central nervous system and plasma; and effects of these neurotransmitters in the nervous system and many other systems. We then address the clinical application of this neurophysiologic approach.

Prospective Tests on Biological Models of Acupuncture
The biological effects of acupuncture include the regulation of a variety of neurohumoral factors and growth control factors. In science, models or hypotheses with confirmed predictions are considered more convincing than models solely based on retrospective explanations. Literature review showed that two biological models of acupuncture have been prospectively tested with independently confirm...

متن کاملNeurobiological Foundations of Acupuncture: The Relevance and Future Prospect Based on Neuroimaging Evidence
Acupuncture is currently gaining popularity as an important modality of alternative and complementary medicine in the western world. Modern neuroimaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, and magnetoencephalography open a window into the neurobiological foundations of acupuncture. In this review, we have summarized evidence derived from neuro...
متن کاملAcupuncture and Pain Management
There is a large and expanding body of scientific evidence supporting the use of acupuncture in pain management. In the last decade, our understanding of how the brain processes acupuncture analgesia has undergone considerable development. Profound studies on neural mechanisms underlying acupuncture analgesia have evolved rapidly and predominately focus on cellular and molecular substrate and f...
متن کاملA Proposed Clinical Reasoning Model For Western Acupuncture
BACKGROUND Two broad paradigms of acupuncture practice have been described, traditional Chinese acupuncture (TCA) which takes its origin from traditional Chinese medicine, and the more recently described scientific or western acupuncture (Filshie & Cummings, 1999). Western acupuncture is based on the basic sciences of anatomy, physiology and pathology. The western approach has been criticised f...
